New alloy that converts heat directly into electricity
"New alloy that converts heat directly into electricity"
University of Minnesota engineering researchers in the College of Science and Engineering have recently discovered a new alloy material that converts heat directly into electricity. This revolutionary energy conversion method is in the early stages of development, but it could have wide-sweeping impact on creating environmentally friendly electricity from waste heat sources.
Researchers say the material could potentially be used to capture waste heat from a car’s exhaust that would heat the material and produce electricity for charging the battery in a hybrid car. Other possible future uses include capturing rejected heat from industrial and power plants or temperature differences in the ocean to create electricity. The research team is looking into possible commercialization of the technology.

State Makes Gay History A Requirement - Politics News Story - KTVU San Francisco: "California became the nation's first state to require its public schools to teach students about the history and contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people Thursday.
The new law, SB48, was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown today and will take effect in January.

The measure authored by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, adds LGBT groups to a list of cultural and ethnic categories that school districts have previously been required to describe accurately and fairly in social studies classes."

Copwatcher Founder Convicted For Resisting Arrest In Missing Camera Case | Pixiq: "John Kurtz, the Orlando Copwatch founder who was facing six years in prison for battery on a law enforcement officer, was acquitted of that felony charge last week.
But he was convicted of resisting arrest without violence – even though the officer testified he was not resisting – proving once again that Florida has an unethical and unconstitutional habit of dishing out resisting arrest convictions without underlying charges to justify the arrest in the first place."

Children Denied Equal Protection Under American Law - ABC News
Restaurant Bans Young Kids - ABC News: "It hasn't been a banner year for the under-6 set.
Starting July 16, McDain's, a Pittsburgh-area restaurant, will ban children under the age of 6 from its dining area. Restaurant owner Mike Vuick said the policy came in response to complaints he'd received from older customers about kids causing a ruckus. In an email to his clientele, Vuick wrote, 'We feel that McDain's is a not a place for young children … and many, many times they have disturbed other customers.'
A few weeks ago, Malaysia Airlines announced that it would ban infants from flying in the first-class cabin because other passengers had complained about squalling babies. And last February it was rumored that Virgin Atlantic and British Airways had been pressured to consider child-free zones and even child-free planes to appease business travelers who, according to a travel survey, listed unruly children as their No. 1 travel-related complaint."

Shutdown forces MillerCoors to pull beer from shelves | StarTribune.com: "Miller Time in Minnesota is over -- until lawmakers reach a budget deal.
The state's government shutdown, now in its 13th day, will soon force MillerCoors to pull its beer from Minnesota liquor stores, bars and restaurants. A state official says the law requires the company to remove products like Coors Light, Miller Lite and Blue Moon imminently.
'I would suspect within days to see that product leave the shelves,' said Doug Neville, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.
A MillerCoors spokesman said they are fighting the decision, which would decimate one of its largest markets in the country.
“Right now we are exploring all options that are available to us,' said spokesman Julian Green. 'We are currently in discussions and hoping that we can get a resolution with the state, with the agency that enforces the sale ... of alcohol.”
Neville says MillerCoors must remove the beer because they did not renew their brand label registration with the state before the shutdown began. By law, brewers must renew those registrations -- which show the label on each brand of beer -- every three years."

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp made 'profit' of $4.8bn in US gov income tax refunds | Mail Online: "Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. collected $4.8 billion in income tax refunds in the last four years, an investigation has uncovered.
The payback means Murdoch's U.S.-based media empire has actually made money on tax rebates on top of its $10.4 billion in profits.
At the standard 35 per cent corporate tax rate the company should have coughed up $3.6 billion in tax."

“GOOD” EXPERIENCES AREN’T NECESSARILY FROM GOD
A twelve-year-old boy in Taiwan was having strange experiences. He felt as though someone was often following him but when he turned around, he saw no one. Often in the morning after a fitful sleep he would have bruises and tell his parents that someone had been hitting him in the night as he slept. His parents took him to medical doctors who could find nothing wrong with the boy. Finally, they took him to a blind fortune-teller – one who had a reputation for his effectiveness in perceiving the spirit world. This fortune-teller told the boy and his parents that the boy was born as a twin and that the other twin had died at birth. This was of course known to the parents, but few other people knew about this as they had kept it a secret. The fortune-teller went on to say that the boy’s problems were caused by the spirit of the deceased twin who was angry about being neglected. His parents had not been faithfully worshiping him and providing for him in the spirit world. Therefore, this spirit was punishing them by harassing their son (his twin). The solution was to set up an altar for the spirit of the deceased twin, worship him with food and incense, and burn spirit money on his behalf. When the family did as they had been instructed, the boy’s strange experiences ceased.
One might ask, “How can it be that this worked”? The answer is that Satan has good reasons to make it work. The spirits tormenting the child were doing what evil spirits delight to do. The fortune-teller is connected to real spiritual knowledge. The spirits told the fortune-teller of the twin. The spirits gave him the “prescription” and other spirits quit their tormenting because by doing so, they have immersed that whole family in the animistic beliefs of spirit worship. Imagine how solid would be their beliefs and how unlikely would be their turning to Jesus Christ. Divination and spiritism work — that is what makes the danger so great. Deceptions that do not “work” have a short shelf life. (Online source)
At least 13 reported dead in India blasts - CNN.com
At least 13 reported dead in India blasts - CNN.com: "At least 13 people were killed and 81 others injured Wednesday in explosions that rocked congested areas of India's financial capital, Mumbai, according to Prithviraj Chavan, the chief minister of the state of Maharashtra.
Police said the explosions occurred within minutes of one another in the Dadar, Opera House and Zaveri Bazaar areas, all busy commercial areas that were certainly teeming with people in the evening rush hour.
'The sound was absolutely deafening,' said Hemant Mehta, who was in the Opera House area, near Mumbai's diamond market, a small epicenter of the city's economy.
Everyone looked up, he said. At first, some thought that heavy rains had caused a building to collapse. He told CNN-IBN that he was sure the sheer panic would cause a stampede."

Outcasts: Tonight Tens Of Thousands Of Formerly Middle Class Americans Will Be Sleeping In Their Cars, In Tent Cities Or On The Streets
Outcasts: Tonight Tens Of Thousands Of Formerly Middle Class Americans Will Be Sleeping In Their Cars, In Tent Cities Or On The Streets: "Economic despair is beginning to spread rapidly in America. As you read this, there are millions of American families that are just barely hanging on by their fingernails. For a growing number of Americans, it has become an all-out battle just to be able to afford to sleep under a roof and put a little bit of food on the table. Sadly, there are more people than ever that are losing that battle. Tonight, tens of thousands of formerly middle class Americans will be sleeping in their cars, even though that is illegal in many U.S. cities. Tens of thousands of others will be sleeping in tent cities or on the streets. Meanwhile, communities all over America are passing measures that are meant to push tent cities and homeless people out of their areas. It turns out that once you lose your job and your home in this country you become something of an outcast. Sadly, the number of 'outcasts' is going to continue to grow as the U.S. economy continues to collapse."

Economy: US Default Inevitable: Fund Manager - CNBC: "A U.S. default isn't a matter of 'if' but 'when,' David Murrin, chief investment officer at Emergent Asset Management, told CNBC.
'It's inevitable that the U.S. will default—it's essentially an empire which is overextended and in decline—and that its financial system will go with it,' he said.
The question is: Does the U.S. default when it is forced to by the outside world, probably the Chinese, or does it take the option to default on its own terms in such a way that it may have a strategic advantage, Murrin said."

Spin This: Cisco To Fire 10,000 | zero hedge: "A year after the outgoing secretary of the treasury top ticked the economy and ushered in QE 2 with his abysmal NYT op-ed 'Welcome to the Recovery' it is only appropriate that we get news that Cisco is preparing to fire 10,000, or 14% of its entire workforce, over and above the number of people that the company said was going to be let go in May. 'The cuts include as many as 7,000 jobs that would be eliminated by the end of August"

Fan Who Caught Jeter's 3,000th Hit May Owe IRS | NBC New York: "The Verizon salesman from Highland Mills, N.Y., gave the ball back to Jeter, whom he called an 'icon,' and the Yankees lavished a slew of prizes, including luxury box seats for every remaining home game this season and post-season and some signed memorabilia, upon him.
Now the IRS wants a piece. The prizes Lopez received are estimated to be worth more than $32,000 -- and, like game show contestants, Lopez may have to pay taxes on the gifts and prizes because the IRS considers them income.
Some estimate the IRS will put Lopez on the hook for anywhere between $5,000 and $13,000"

Obama says he cannot guarantee Social Security checks will go out on August 3 - Political Hotsheet - CBS News: "President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.
'I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it,' Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News.
The Obama administration and many economists have warned of economic catastrophe if the United States does not raise the amount it is legally allowed to borrow by August 2."

What happened to the American flags on the moon? - CBS News: "As a symbol of the Fourth of July holiday, it is easy for the conversation this time of year to turn to iconic American flags, like the flag the Marines raised at Iwo Jima; the one firefighters put up at ground zero; and the one that flew over Fort McHenry and was the inspiration for what would become our national anthem.
As the space shuttle program comes to an end this week, CBS News decided to look into the flags the astronauts left behind on six trips to the moon. What's become of them?"

IMF chief threatens 'real nasty consequences' if debt ceiling is not raised!
IMF Chief Calls on US to Raise Borrowing Limit - ABC News: "Christine Lagarde, the first woman to head the lending institution, said in an interview broadcast Sunday that it would cause interest rates to rise and stock markets to fall. That would threaten an important IMF goal, which is preserving stability in the world economy, she said.
The U.S. borrowing limit is $14.3 trillion. Obama administration officials say the U.S. would begin to default without an agreement by Aug. 2.
'If you draw out the entire scenario of default, yes, of course, you have all of that — interest hikes, stock markets taking a huge hit and real nasty consequences, not just for the United States, but for the entire global economy, because the U.S. is such a big player and matters so much for other countries,' she said."
