Labor union chief calls immigration bill dangerous, sees agency as 'approval machine' - Washington Times: "The Senate’s immigration bill will raise national security risks and the Obama administration will do little more than “rubber-stamp” illegal immigrants into the program, endangering Americans, says the labor union representing the 12,000 employees who will have to approve the applications.
Kenneth Palinkas, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Council 119, which represents officers and staff at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, will deliver a damning critique of the Senate bill Monday, according to a copy of his statement obtained by The Washington Times."

High Plains Aquifer Dwindles, Hurting Farmers - NYTimes.com
High Plains Aquifer Dwindles, Hurting Farmers - NYTimes.com: "Last year, Mr. Yost was coaxing just 300 gallons from the earth, and pumping up sand in order to do it. By harvest time, the grit had robbed him of $20,000 worth of pumps and any hope of returning to the bumper harvests of years past.
“That’s prime land,” he said not long ago, gesturing from his pickup at the stubby remains of last year’s crop. “I’ve raised 294 bushels of corn an acre there before, with water and the Lord’s help.” Now, he said, “it’s over.”
The land, known as Section 35, sits atop the High Plains Aquifer, a waterlogged jumble of sand, clay and gravel that begins beneath Wyoming and South Dakota and stretches clear to the Texas Panhandle. The aquifer’s northern reaches still hold enough water in many places to last hundreds of years. But as one heads south, it is increasingly tapped out, drained by ever more intensive farming and, lately, by drought."

Marissa Alexander’s 20-years mandatory prison sentence, where’s the damn community outrage? | Chocolate City: The Best African American Blog
Marissa Alexander’s 20-years mandatory prison sentence, where’s the damn community outrage? | Chocolate City: The Best African American Blog: "If you haven't been following Alexander's story, please allow me to recap the events that led to her getting slammed with a senseless and unjust mandatory twenty year sentence.
Alexander is serving “mandatory twenty year sentence,” for shooting a warning shot into the air after her abusive husband, Rico Gray, threatened to kill her. Nobody was hurt in that case. Alexander unsuccessfully tried to use Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" as her defense, but a jury convicted her of aggravated assault after ONLY 12 minutes of deliberation."

Baby Photos Might Get Your Lost Wallet Returned
Baby Photos Might Get Your Lost Wallet Returned: "Psychologists in Edinburgh left 240 test wallets "lost" around city streets last year, each containing a mailing address that a good Samaritan could act on. In the plastic photo frame of equal numbers of wallets, pictures of "a smiling baby, a cute puppy, a happy family or a contented elderly couple" were inserted, or no image was left at all. Some wallets also contained papers indicating the owner had recently donated to charity."

Arizona : Man Camping with Family Has Firearms Confiscated | Secure Our Freedom: "Arizona is known as one of the more gun friendly states. Here in Arizona we are a Constitutional Carry state, meaning we can legally carry any firearm (long gun or pistol) with or without a license to carry. In my personal experience with police in Arizona, most are very open to the idea of citizens possessing weapons."

Obesity persists with brain biochemistry changes | Brown University News and Events
Obesity persists with brain biochemistry changes | Brown University News and Events: "In a new discovery reported in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Brown University and Lifespan researchers show that in the brain cells of rats, obesity impedes the production of a hormone that curbs appetite and inspires calorie burning. The root cause appears to be a breakdown in the protein-processing mechanism of the cells. In the lab, the researchers showed they could fix the breakdown with drugs."
