Congress’ next move on jobless benefits unclear - Rockford, IL - Rockford Register Star: "Congress has a long to-do list when it comes back into session next week, and it’s unclear where extending unemployment benefits will fall on the calendar.
Nearly 2 million Americans face losing their benefits during the holidays if Congress doesn’t reauthorize their funding past Nov. 30. Every state offers 26 weeks of unemployment insurance benefits, but federal extensions have added up to 73 weeks of benefits in four tiers in many states, including Illinois.
Without congressional action, claimants will be unable to move to their next tier of benefits after the end of the month. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates 124,000 people in Illinois would be affected, with some losing their benefits as soon as the week of Dec. 6."
