Digital Kills Printed Encyclopaedia Britannica After 244 Years - Tech Europe - WSJ

Digital Kills Printed Encyclopaedia Britannica After 244 Years - Tech Europe - WSJ: "The 2010 printed edition of the 32-volume Encyclopaedia Britannica will be the last. There will be no 2012 edition. It will now only be available digitally.

First published in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1768 the printed edition is an obvious casualty of the digital revolution. The company, however, does not appear guilty of being left behind by technology. The encyclopaedia has been available digitally in disc form for 30 years and online for 20 years.

Ultimately its biggest recent challenge has come from the crowd-sourced Wikipedia which neither charges for access nor pays its contributors. That is tough competition for a commercially-run business."
