Patriot Act Extension Signed By Obama

Patriot Act Extension Signed By Obama: "Minutes before a midnight deadline, President Barack Obama signed into law a four-year extension of post-Sept. 11 powers to search records and conduct roving wiretaps in pursuit of terrorists.

'It's an important tool for us to continue dealing with an ongoing terrorist threat,' Obama said Friday after a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

With Obama in France, the White House said the president used an autopen machine that holds a pen and signs his actual signature. It is only used with proper authorization of the president."

Two New York City Police Officers Acquitted of Rape - NYTimes.com: "The woman had described snippets of a harrowing night in which the officers, called to help her because she was extremely intoxicated, instead abused her. They insisted no rape occurred, with one allowing only that he snuggled with her while she wore nothing but a bra.

The verdict brings to an end a criminal case that drew outrage across the city when the officers were indicted in 2009, and provides some measure of vindication for the officers, Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata"

Joplin MO tornado: At least 89 dead as twister cuts 4-mile swathe through Missouri town | Mail Online: "As shell-shocked residents of tornado-hit Joplin braced themselves for another powerful storm system this evening, new aerial images emerged showing in terrifying detail the path of the twister which destroyed the Missouri city.

The shocking photos reveal for the first time the true extent of the damage caused when the mile-wide tornado that killed at least 122 people blasted much of the city off the map and slammed straight into its hospital.

Forecasters warned residents on Tuesday to prepare themselves for a looming storm system that has all the early signs of spawning more deadly tornadoes."

Egypt to open Rafah crossing permanently | Top AP Stories | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle: "Egypt's decision Wednesday to end its blockade of Gaza by opening the only crossing to the Hamas-ruled Palestinian territory this weekend could ease the isolation of 1.4 million Palestinians there. It also puts the new Egyptian regime at odds with Israel, which insists on careful monitoring of people and goods entering Gaza for security reasons.
The Rafah crossing will be open permanently starting Saturday, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency announced. That would provide Gaza Palestinians their first open border to the world in four years, since Egypt and Israel slammed their crossings shut after the Islamic militant Hamas overran the Gaza Strip in 2007."

Secret Louisiana flood chemical contamination delayed, Mandatory evacs - National Human Rights | Examiner.com: "Louisiana residents are warned to prepare for intensive chemical contamination from 1000's of oil wells soon to be under water, despite the flooding in the battered Cajun country moving down river slower than predicted, the crest now expected at Butte LaRose, the midpoint of the river basin, on May 27 at 24.5 feet, and at Morgan City near the Gulf of Mexico on May 29 at 11 feet. Drone Killing Debate: Germany Limits Information Exchange with US Intelligence - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International: "When death came, delivered from the sky, Bünyamin E. was sitting in the back room of a building in the mountains of Waziristan. A few friends of his were staying at the property, a farm on the outskirts of Mir Ali, including Shahab Dashti, who had slipped away from Hamburg at night to embark on a 'holy war.'

Bünyamin, 20, was new there, after coming to Pakistan in the summer of 2010. He and his brother Emrah had left their home and family in the western German city of Wuppertal, replacing their life in Germany with a new one led according to the rules of Sharia law.
Sometimes all it takes is a cigarette to make the difference between life and death. On that Monday in October, Emrah E. left the house at just the right moment to smoke a cigarette, he said later. That action would end up saving his life. The missile, fired from a drone, destroyed the back room of the building, killing Bünyamin, Dashti and a few others. The exact death toll is still unknown. Emrah, who saw his brother die as he stood outside, called their parents in Wuppertal to tell them what had happened."

Danish commandoes wade into Greenpeace Arctic oil protest | Environment | guardian.co.uk: "Armed Danish commandoes are thought to have been landed on a giant oil rig by helicopter to prevent environmentalists interfering with a British oil company's controversial exploration of deep Arctic waters. In a stand-off in the Davis Strait, west of Greenland, the Danish navy has been shadowing the Greenpeace ship Esperanza as it tracked the 53,000 tonne Leiv Eiriksson in iceberg-strewn sea to the site where it plans to search for oil at depths of up to 5,000ft.

The confrontation between Denmark and Greenpeace, which argues that it is dangerous to drill for oil in pristine Arctic waters, follows the decision by Scottish oil company Cairn Energy to explore for oil and gas in Baffin Sea this summer."

The number of job cuts will rise mainly because the federal stimulus program is ending while the cost of Medicaid is 'spiraling,' said the report by UBS Investment Research.

Activist Post: "Free Speech Zones" Killing Free Speech Across Orwellian America: "'Congress shall make no law... abridging... the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.' -- First Amendment to the Constitution of The United States of America."

The "free speech zone," despite being anathema to the U.S. Constitution, has been used intermittently since the Vietnam War protests. When their use was expanded to actually hide protesters during both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in 2004, free speech zones were quickly written off by the mainstream media as either no big deal, or essential to protect participants from dangerous activists. Many in the alternative media warned that this was a dangerous precedent to set; after all, America itself is considered by the Constitution to be a free speech zone, with laws that were created to prosecute crimes when they are committed and not before.

Feds Issue Threat: No Fly Zone for Texas? – Tenth Amendment Center: "Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice upped the ante in a high-stakes political game of chicken. Lobbying against pending legislation in the Texas legislature which would criminalize any searches conducted without probable cause, U.S. Attorney John E. Murphy sent a letter to a few high-ranking members of Texas’ government warning against promoting the bill and threatening a complete closure of all flights to and from the state.

“If HR [sic] 1937 were enacted, the federal government would likely seek an emergency stay of the statute,” Murphy wrote. “Unless or until such a stay were granted, TSA would likely be required to cancel any flight or series of flights for which it could not ensure the safety of passengers and crew.”

No doubt written with the threatening intent one reads into it, Murphy added: “We urge that you consider the ramifications of this bill before casting your vote.”"

Fukushima Containment Vessels May Be Leaking, Tepco Says - Businessweek: "Tokyo Electric Power Co. said the containment chambers of damaged reactors at its Fukushima nuclear plant were likely breached, identifying additional source of radiation leaks that may exceed Chernobyl.

Computer simulations of the meltdowns of three reactors in March indicates holes formed in chambers, the company known as Tepco said in a report.

The analysis confirms what independent researchers have said occurred after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami hit the plant. The report to the government raises fresh questions about how Tepco, which took more than two months to acknowledge fuel rods had melted, is handling the crisis, a nuclear researcher said."

iPads for kindergarteners?

iPads for kindergarteners?: "Parents in Ashburnham are questioning a school proposal to buy 150 new iPads for children in kindergarten.

The idea is for the school district to purchase 150 iPads for children to use in class. Parents would be given the option to lease them for 25 dollars a month for two years. At the end of the two year term, the parents would own them.

Some question if this is the best use of taxpayer money. Catherine Adair has children in school at Briggs Elementary. She tells FOX 25, 'We have no Vice Principal. We have a very bare bones staff. I don't think kindergartners having iPads is the best expenditure of taxpayer money.'"

China: The New Investment Savior?: "Is Idaho really ready to give the Peoples Republic of China a “beachhead” in the Gem State? Secretary Dietrich’s happy use of a military metaphor to describe China’s aspirations vis-à-vis the United States is odd, to say the least; some might even consider it alarming, though the Statesman, apparently, saw no reason to question his choice of words.

Merriam-Webster.com defines “beachhead” as “an area on a hostile shore occupied to secure further landing of troops and supplies.”

Dictionary.com provides a similar definition: “the area that is the first objective of a military force landing on an enemy shore.”"

Chinese Company Eyes 50 Square Miles of Idaho : News Article : Idaho Department of Commerce

Chinese Company Eyes Idaho : News Article : Idaho Department of Commerce: "A Chinese national company is interested in developing a 10,000- to 30,000-acre technology zone for industry, retail centers and homes south of the Boise Airport.

Officials of the China National Machinery Industry Corp. have broached the idea — based on a concept popular in China today — to city and state leaders.

They are also interested in helping build and finance a fertilizer plant near American Falls, an idea company officials returned to Idaho this month to pursue.

This ambitious, long-term proposal would start with a manufacturing and warehouse zone tied to the airport, and could signify a shift in the economic relationship between the two superpowers — a relationship once defined by U.S. companies like the J.R. Simplot Co., Hewlett-Packard and Morrison-Knudsen that would head to China to build and develop.

“I think China’s coming over here shows they are willing to collaborate on the reinvigoration of the American industrial base,” said Jeff Don, CEO of Eagle-based C3, which is acting as an Idaho representative for the Chinese company, called Sinomach for short."

“We really gotta remove pride, seriously. There’s no other reason the issue’s going on,” he said.
Perhaps his most controversial statement was about the possibility of no NFL season. Lewis painted a grim picture across America of people without jobs and nothing to do on Sundays.
“Do this research. If we don’t have a season, watch how much evil, which we call it crime, watch how much crime picks up when you take away our game,” he said."

Earth's core may be melting, scientists find - Technology & science - Science - OurAmazingPlanet - msnbc.com: "The inner core of the Earth may be melting, scientists now find.
This melting could actually be linked to activity at the Earth's surface, the researchers said, and added that the discovery could help explain how the core generates the planet's magnetic field.
The Earth's inner core is a ball of solid iron about 1,500 miles wide, about the same size as the moon. This ball is surrounded by an outer core made up mostly of liquid iron-nickel alloy, a highly viscous mantle layer and, topping it off, a solid crust that forms the surface of the planet.
As the Earth cools from the inside out, the molten outer core is slowly freezing. This is leading the solid inner core to grow at a rate of about 1 millimeter per year.
However, scientists now find that the inner core might be melting at the same time"

Huntsville, Alabama’s Photon-X, Inc. recently received an Air Force contract to develop such a camera. With one snap, the company claims, its sensor can build a three-dimensional image of a person’s face: the cornerstone of a distinctive “bio-signature” that can be used to track that person anywhere. With a few frames more, the device can capture that face’s unique facial muscle motions, and turn those movements into a “behaviormetric” profile that’s even more accurate."

In a story about the bin Laden mission, the NSA very casually dropped a number: Every six hours, the agency collects as much data as is stored in the entire Library of Congress.
That data includes transcripts of phone calls and in-house discussions, video and audio surveillance, and a massive amount of photography. 'The volume of data they're pulling in is huge,' said John V. Parachini, director of the Intelligence Policy Center at RAND.
